End of the Line for Illegal Smuggler of HCFCs

A man was sentenced in Florida yesterday to 30 months in prison for illegally smuggling 418,654 kilograms of HCFCs in 29,107 cylinders. The value of the HCFCs is estimated at $3.9 million. A corporation was sentenced to 3 years probation. Both were required to pay a $40,000 fine and forfeit $1.3 million to the US.
According to court records, the corporation in question formed in February 2007 and was in the business of importing merchandise, including refrigerant gas. Between March 2007 and April 2009, it engaged in the smuggling of large quantities of HCFC-22 into the United States for subsequent resale. See the link for the full story.
